Lemony Greek Chickpeas – Garlicky, lemony, and full of bright, fresh, Greek flavors, these Trader Joe’s copycat chickpeas make an easy, healthy side dish in only 10 minutes!

Trader Joe’s has a can of Greek chickpeas that I love. They make a quick-fix side dish to a lot of Mediterranean dishes that I make.
Problem is, nothing at Trader Joe’s stays forever as it’s here one day and gone the next, so I decided to recreate them myself!
My Lemony Greek Chickpeas turned out wonderfully!
I no longer buy them at TJ’s because I can make them at home – cheaper!
They taste like something you would get a restaurant, but yet they’re ready at home in only 10 minutes!
These fabulous Greek chickpeas are made with healthy ingredients like fresh garlic, fresh parsley, and lemon juice, olive oil, and some spices.
This healthy chickpea recipe is vegan, high in plant-based protein and fiber.
Ingredients needed for this recipe (scroll down to recipe card for complete recipe):
- Canned chickpeas
- Fresh lemon juice
- Fresh parsley
- Fresh garlic
- Olive oil
- Seasonings – sumac, cumin, crushed red pepper flakes, salt, pepper
How to serve Lemony Greek Chickpeas?
We love these chickpeas in our homemade Greek Bowls with some grilled or oven-baked chicken, a Greek salad, and some hummus with Toasted Za’atar Pita Chips.
To make a great vegetarian meal, serve these lemony chickpeas with a Greek salad and rice or a vegetable.
How long are they good for?
These Greek Chickpeas can be kept in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.
Can I use dried parsley instead?
No. The bright flavor of fresh parsley is a big component of this dish. I would wait to make it until you can get some.
You could use fresh cilantro, but the dish wouldn’t taste “Greek”.

NOTES:
- Sumac is a maroon colored spice that adds a subtle tangy, lemony flavor to your dish. It’s perfect on these beans, and is amazing sprinkled on hummus and Greek salad. It may be hard to find in a traditional grocery store, but you can get it HEREfrom Amazon.
- Please use a real lemon for the lemon juice and not a squeezable plastic lemon, as the flavor is not the same.

small sauce pan or skillet
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 minced garlic cloves
- 15 oz. can of chickpeas drained
- 1/4 tsp. cumin
- 1 oz. fresh lemon juice (approx. 1 lemon)
- pinch crushed red pepper flakes
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
- sprinkle sumac (optional)
- salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
In a small sauce pan or skillet, sauté the garlic in olive oil for 1-2 minutes, stirring often. Then add the cumin and sauté for another minute to bring out the flavors of the cumin.
Add the drained can of chickpeas to the garlic oil along with the red pepper flakes, lemon juice, salt & pepper. Sauté for a couple minutes to let the flavors come together, taste for needed salt & pepper, then toss in the fresh parsley. If you have some, sprinkle the sumac over the beans when serving. Enjoy!
