Red Sox prospect Jhostynxon Garcia — also known by his nickname “The Password” — is on fire with multiple hits in six of his past seven games.
Garcia went 2-for-3 with two RBI singles, a walk and run to help Double-A Portland to a 5-1 victory over Reading on Wednesday.
His RBI single in the first inning gave Portland a 1-0 lead. He then broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning with an RBI single to make it 2-1.
The 22-year-old right-handed hitter from Venezuela is batting .340 with a .448 on-base percentage, .489 slugging percentage, .937 OPS, one homer, four doubles, 10 RBIs, 10 runs, 10 walks and 14 strikeouts in 13 games.
MassLive ranked Garcia the No. 10 on its preseason Top 25 Red Sox prospect list. Baseball America ranks him No. 8 on its Top 30 Red Sox prospect list.
Other Red Sox minor league notes from Wednesday:
~ Marcelo Mayer had two hits in each game of Worcester’s doubleheader Wednesday. He now has six straight two-hit games. He has crushed four homers and seen his batting average increase 84 points (from .193 to .277) during the six games. His home run in the second game had a 107.5 mph exit velocity. He also had a 110.5 mph single in the first game.
~ Roman Anthony’s exit velocities continue to be off the charts. He had a 110.2 mph double for Worcester on Wednesday. The 20-year-old Anthony is batting .297 with a .436 on-base percentage, .554 slugging percentage, .990 OPS, four homers, five doubles, one triple, 13 RBIs, 17 runs, 19 walks and 21 strikeouts in 21 games.
~ Righty Nick Burdi recorded the save in the second game of Worcester’s doubleheader. He pitched a scoreless and allowed two walks while striking out two. The 32-year-old, who pitched for the Yankees last year, signed a minor league deal at the beginning of spring training. He has allowed just one run in 10 ⅔ innings (0.84 ERA) over eight outs for the WooSox so far.
~ Lefty Brandon Clarke, a 2024 fifth round pick, started for Low-A Salem and pitched 3 ⅓ scoreless and hitless innings. He allowed one walk and struck out six. Clarke turned 22 earlier this month. He has allowed just one run, two hits and two walks while striking out 17 in 9 ⅔ innings (three starts).
~ Franklin Arias, who Baseball America ranks No. 72 on its Top 100 list, went 2-for-4 with an RBI, run, hit by pitch, double and strikeout in Salem’s 4-0 win over Hickory. The 19-year-old is batting .359 with a .431 on-base percentage, .422 slugging percentage and .853 OPS in 16 games.
