BBC Sport at York BarbicanIn a frantic evening session, two-time UK champion Mark Williams threw away a 4-1 and 5-2 lead as he lost 6-5 to another former world champion in Stuart Bingham.
Williams became the seventh of the 16 seeds to go out in the first round. There looked to be little chance of a shock when Williams only needed one more frame, only for Bingham to make breaks of 57, 79 and 82 on his way to winning four successive frames.
After Judd Trump and Neil Robertson had complained about the condition of table one in the afternoon session, China's Zhang Anda made a maximum 147 break on table two in his 6-3 victory over compatriot Lei Peifan.
Lei won the opening two frames, but Zhang's 147 came in frame four and he then moved into a 5-2 lead. He almost won it 6-2 only for a miscue on the penultimate pink to cost him the frame.
However, it did not matter as Zhang won the ninth frame to seal victory, and will meet Bingham next on Thursday.

Stuart Bingham has just clawed one back against Williams. Bingham started the frame with a break of 57, eight reds and seven blacks, and on course for a maximum before he missed.
He ended the frame being placed in a number of tough snookers as Williams looked to snatch the frame, before Bingham took it.
Zhang, who has successfully made a maximum tonight, has won five frames in a row after losing the opening two to lead fellow Chinese player Lei Peifan 5-2.

BBC Sport at York BarbicanChina's Zhang Anda made the first maximum 147 break of this year's UK Championship in his first-round match against compatriot Lei Peifan at the York Barbican.
Zhang, 32, potted 15 reds and 15 blacks and then all the colours in order with a packed crowd giving him a standing ovation as he sunk the final ball.
His maximum break is the 21st in the history of the UK Championship, the 208th in professional snooker and the sixth in the 2024-25 season.
The achievement earns Zhang a £15,000 prize, although that will be shared if other players do likewise in the rest of this week's tournament, which concludes on Sunday.
Zhang's 147 came when he was 2-1 down on table two, with the mid-session interval immediately following that.
The winner of the match will take on a former world champion - either Mark Williams of Wales or England's Stuart Bingham.
Zhang, the 11th seed, had previously made two 147s - against Anton Kazakov of Ukraine in qualifying for the 2022 European Masters and then again in the International Championship final against England's Tom Ford a year later.
If Zhang makes another maximum in the rest of the tournament, in January's Masters or the World Championship at the Crucible in Sheffield in April and May then he would earn a £147,000 reward.

When asked if they were the worst he had played in as a professional, he responded: "I've played in some bad conditions, but that was close.
"It's disappointing as it seems to be the bigger events. It was very heavy all the time. I've always struggled here because the tables are so heavy.
"Hopefully they can change them. All the players have been struggling - hopefully they can do something about it."
A World Snooker Tour (WST) spokesperson said: "We always strive to provide the best possible conditions and welcome feedback from players.
"The recent weather has seen a large volume of rainfall and high humidity around the country. This can negatively influence the conditions."

However, both players were critical of the conditions at York Barbican, with seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry, speaking on BBC TV, saying the table was "unplayable".
"I'm glad Stephen said it was unplayable because that was as tough as I'd ever played on," said 2010 world champion Robertson. "It was as unplayable as it gets in professional conditions. Being such a tough sport anyway it can make either player look stupid.
"This venue and the conditions usually play well - it's not the table fitters' fault. The arena felt fine and I don't understand it. With the bounce off the cushions it can fly two or three feet further on and you're out of position.
"I can't really fault my performance, it was just really tough going out there."

Although unhappy with the conditions, Trump was happy with how he performed to fight back and claim the victory.
"It was scrappy to start with and I managed to get a bit of momentum after it went 3-2 and I raised my game. I played as well as I could play on that table.

Robertson had a glorious chance to move 4-1 ahead but missed the penultimate ball and that proved to be the turning point in the match.
Trump then made breaks of 73, 126 and 67 to move 5-3 ahead, and sealed the ninth frame to win 6-3 and set up a tie with three-time champion John Higgins.

It has not been the match we were hoping for, but Trump showed his quality in frame seven with a superb break of 126. That makes it a century apiece in this match after Robertson's run of 107 in frame four.

Neil Robertson had a glorious chance to move 4-1 ahead, only to miss the pink. Judd Trump then played safe, Robertson missed a long pot and Trump stuck him in a tricky snooker, which drew one six-point foul.
Robertson then tried to roll the pink down the table, but left it hanging over the pocket and Trump did the rest to make it 2-3.
